Team India kickstarted their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a dominating 6-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Thursday. Vice-captain Shubman Gill won the 'Player of the Match' award for his match-winning knock of 101* (129 balls) as India chased down the target 229 with 21 balls to spare.
Earlier, Indian bowlers led by Mohammed Shami restricted Bangladesh to a small total of 228 runs. Bangladesh was bowled out with two balls to spare. Shami dismissed five batters during his spell while also completing 200 wickets in ODIs. The pacer also broke Mitchell Starc's world record for the fastest to take 200 ODI wickets (in terms of balls bowled).
Shami also became the fastest Indian to pick 200 ODI wickets, in terms of matches. He broke current BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar's record of 200 wickets in 133 innings with his 103 bowling essays.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma also added a feather to his cap during the match, becoming the second-fastest batter to score 11,000 ODI runs. Rohit took 11,868 balls to score 11,000 runs, only behind Virat Kohli's 11831 balls.
The 'Men In Blue' will now face arch-rivals and defending champions Pakistan in Dubai.
The tournament title defence has not started for Pakistan as they would have liked. The hosts suffered a 60-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy opening game at the National Stadium in Karachi on Feb. 19.
Hosting an ICC tournament for the first time since 1996, Pakistan will be knocked out if they lose against India.
