The Income Tax Department has opened the online rectification window to correct errors in tax demand notices and intimations for up to Assessment Year (AY) 2023-24 (Financial Year 2022-23). Introduced in January 2025, this feature helps taxpayers fix issues in their filed ITRs that the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) couldn’t process on time due to errors.
Taxpayers can request rectification through the e-filing portal if mistakes are found in their records, in an intimation issued under Section 143(1), or in a CPC order under Section 154. However, rectification requests can only be made for returns that have already been processed by CPC.
The Income Tax Department may sometimes make minor errors while processing ITRs, which are evident from official records. For example, it may deny deductions or tax credits that were correctly claimed in the return. However, taxpayers must note that if the mistakes require proof or interpretation, the rectification request option cannot be used.
Here’s how you can correct errors in tax demand notices
Step 1: Access the e-filing portal by entering your password and valid user ID.
Step 2: Click “Services” and then “Rectification.”
Step 3: Click on New Request on the Rectification page.
Step 4: The New Request page will automatically fill in your PAN. Select Wealth Tax or Income Tax.
Step 5: From the dropdown menu, choose the Assessment Year. Click "Continue."
You must also provide the most recent intimation reference number if you choose the Wealth Tax option, and then click "Continue."
Step 6: Rectification requests are classified into the following categories:
Income Tax Rectification includes tax credit mismatch correction, status correction, reprocessing the return, exemption section correction, return data correction (Online), return data correction (Offline), and additional information for 234C interest.
Wealth Tax Rectification include tax credit mismatch correction, return data correction (XML), and reprocessing the return.
Step 7: One can choose the required rectification request and submit it along with verified documents.
Your rectification request will get submitted once validation is complete and you will receive a success message on screen.
A confirmation message will also be sent to the email address and mobile number you have on file with the e-filing portal.
