India expressed "deep concern" over the situation in Venezuela after the United States exfiltrated President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and vowed to install a friendly regime in the oil-rich country.
"Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Sunday.
"India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region," it added.
The MEA said the Indian embassy in the capital city Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance.
The government had issued an advisory for citizens to avoid "all non-essential travel to Venezuela" in light of US missile strikes, urging all Indian nationals to exercise "extreme caution", restrict their movement, and be in touch with Embassy.
Close to 50 non-resident Indians, along with around 30 persons of Indian origin are currently residing in Venezuela, news agency PTI reported.
Global leftist leaders condemned the US attack in Venezuela, while Washington's allies in Europe, Asia and South America issued guarded response.
Russia, Colombia, Cuba and Mexico all rejected the military action by the US in the South American nation.
Moscow said it prompted “deep concern and condemnation,” according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro said he was seeking a meeting of the United Nations Security Council — a call supported by Russia and Mexico — and rejected “the aggression against the sovereignty of Venezuela and of Latin America.”
China condemned Washington's "blatant use of force against a sovereign state and action against its president" and said it is “deeply shocked” by the US military strikes.
"Such hegemonic acts of the US seriously violate international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region.China firmly opposes it," the Foreign Ministry said.
