Travel And Tourism In India Poised For Growth: WTTC

The travel and tourism sector in India is set to experience strong growth, with projections indicating a 7% increase over the next decade, according to Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council. Simpson shared these insights during her video address at the India Travel & Tourism Sustainability Conclave 2025.

Simpson highlighted that the contribution of travel and tourism to India's economy is expected to align with the global average of 10% in the near future. Currently, the sector accounts for 7% of the Indian economy. "I know the way India is growing at the moment that you will soon be getting to that sort of number," Simpson said.

The WTTC President emphasised the sector's potential, noting that it was valued at approximately $230 billion.

Simpson also underscored the importance of sustainable practices within the industry, pointing out that travel and tourism contribute to 4.8% of India's greenhouse gas emissions. However, she commended India for reducing its carbon intensity faster than the global average, with a 13% decline.

The outlook for India's travel and tourism sector is promising, with significant opportunities for growth and development in the coming years.

Earlier in April, India and Japan explored ways to boost tourism ties, with focus on promoting Buddhist sites to Japanese tourists and improving air connectivity in the fourth Joint Working Group Meeting on Tourism Cooperation between India and Japan.
