Thunderstorm Alert For NCR, Parts Of UP, Haryana, Punjab On June 2; Details Here

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for thunderstorms and strong winds on Monday evening in the National Capital Region.

Delhi is also expected to witness thunderstorms and light rain, accompanied with strong winds gusting up to 60 kmph on June 2 and June 3, as per the IMD forecast.  

In its latest weather bulletin, the weather agency has also predicted a similar weather condition in parts of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh with thundersquall and wind speed reaching 50–60 kmph. An orange alert has been issued for the region by the weather agency on June 2.

The IMD stated that maximum temperatures over Delhi are likely to be between 36°C and 38°C, below the normal by up to 2°C to 4°C. The city will face "very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorm and gusty winds (speed 40–50 kmph) temporarily reaching 60 kmph during thunderstorm with dust rising winds towards evening/night". 

The predominant surface wind will be from the southwest with a speed of less than 25 kmph in the afternoon. The speed of the winds from the southwest direction will gradually decrease to 10-15 kmph during evening and night.

The prediction for rain and windy weather comes after strong gusty winds, accompanied by showers, swept through the NCR on Sunday. The weather conditions forced the diversion of 14 Delhi-bound flights.

Last month, Delhi experienced unprecedented frequent rains, below-normal daytime temperatures and the absence of any heatwave conditions, PTI reported. The capital received 188.9 mm of rainfall in May 2025, 202% more than the normal monthly average of 62.6 mm, making it the wettest May on record.

The unusual weather had been attributed to the early arrival monsoon in Mumbai, which led to ripple effects in other cities, including Delhi.  

IMD’s Latest Prediction

The weather agency has also forecast heavy showers in parts of northeastern India. The region has been battling heavy rainfall due to the formation of a depression in the Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. The weather agency also issued a heavy rainfall warning for parts of Kerala, east Rajasthan and sub-Himalayan Sikkim and West Bengal as well.

A low to moderate risk of flash floods has been predicted by the IMD in northeastern districts such as Lawngtlai, Lunglei and Saiha districts in Mizoram and Churachandpur, Senapati and Tamenglong districts in Manipur.
