Over 300 Dharavi Residents Access Social Welfare Worth Rs 10 Crore Through Lok Vikas Initiative

Over 300 residents of Dharavi have gained access to critical government welfare schemes through Lok Vikas, an initiative by the Dharavi Social Mission, according to a statement from the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.

Held on Oct. 19 and Nov. 16, the two Lok Vikas events facilitated enrolment for an additional 197 individuals, some of whom benefited from multiple schemes. The initiative had already brought medical insurance benefits worth close to Rs 10 crore to over 300 families in Dharavi.

Welfare programmes like Ayushman Bharat, E-Shram Card, and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana provide much-needed financial and health security to people who work in the unorganised sectors. In a locality. Issues such as lack of awareness and concerns about cybercrime often prevent residents from gaining access to these benefits, it said.

Umesh Sonar, a participant, shared how Lok Vikas eased the enrolment process for him and his wife Pushpa into Ayushman Bharat. "Earlier, we were afraid to register due to misuse of Aadhaar and cybercrime concerns. With DSM's help, we felt safe and confident," Sonar said about the Lok Vikas event.

The programme covers more than enrolment and facilitate better access to essential social protections.

"I enrolled in the E-Shram Card scheme and found the process smooth. Many people are unaware of these benefits, but Lok Vikas ensures we don't miss out," Silarbee Shaikh, a 48-year-old cook, said.

Dharavi Social Mission's approach aims to be inclusive and to overcome the roadblocks residents face, to facilitate free and secure assistance to enrol in welfare programmes. Social worker Bhagyalakshmi highlighted its importance: "For many, these schemes are a safety net. DSM is making sure no one is left behind."

With more events planned, Lok Vikas aims to expand its reach, bridging the gap between government welfare schemes and the people of Dharavi. By creating awareness and unlocking benefits, DSM is strengthening the community and building a foundation for a more secure future.
