Mumbai Rains: Waterlogging In Parts Of City, More Showers Expected Today —Check IMD Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an alert for more rain, a day after heavy showers disrupted normal life in several parts of Mumbai.

The weather agency has put the city on 'Orange' alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds.

This comes as the city is already reeling from heavy overnight and morning rain, causing widespread waterlogging and major transport disruptions. With more rain predicted, the situation may worsen.

The rains have also led to suspension of suburban train services between Vadala Road and Chhatrapati Shivaj Maharaj Terminus on Central Railway's Harbour line from 10:25 a.m, PTI reported.

Earlier, a well-marked low-pressure area persisted above the region, which has now turned into a low-pressure area over Marathwada and central Maharashtra, resulting in the rainfall. 

Several people reacted to IMD’s social media post, informing that many areas in Raigad and Navi Mumbai, among others, are already getting “very heavy” showers since night. 

The IMD also reported that Mumbai’s Colaba recorded 71.9 mm of rainfall between 8:30 a.m. Sunday and 5:30 a.m. Monday. The Mumbai airport area reported 33 mm of rainfall during this period. Sion, Tata Power Chembur, and other places have also received significant rainfall, the IMD data showed.

According to the IMD, Mumbai will continue to receive significant rainfall till May 29, with the city on a yellow alert till May 28. Other coastal districts of Maharashtra, such as Thane and Palghar, are also on a yellow alert during this period. Meanwhile, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are on an orange alert on some days, anticipating heavier rains.

May 26: The Regional Meteorological Centre’s district-wise forecast on Monday predicted “very likely” probability of "heavy to very heavy rainfall & thunderstorms with lightning & gusty winds (50- 60 kmph) at isolated places."

May 27: "Very likely" probability of "thunderstorms accompanied with lightning, heavy rainfall & gusty winds (40- 50) at isolated places."

May 28: "Very likely" probability of "thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, heavy rainfall & gusty winds (40- 50) at isolated places."

May 29: “Very likely” probability of “heavy rainfall at isolated places.”

In view of the expected heavy rainfall, the IMD has warned about potential cloud-to-ground lightning, the fall of weak trees or structures, and short-term power disruptions.
