Commuters in Mumbai will need to dig deeper into their pockets starting Friday, May 9, as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has announced a fare hike across its bus services. Both air-conditioned (AC) and non-air-conditioned (non-AC) buses will see higher ticket prices, marking the first major revision since 2019.
Minimum Fare Doubled
Under the revised structure, the minimum fare for non-AC buses has doubled from Rs 5 to Rs 10, while the maximum fare will now stand at Rs 60, up from Rs 20. AC bus passengers will also face steeper rates, with the minimum fare rising from Rs 6 to Rs 12 and the maximum fare increasing from Rs 25 to Rs 65.
BEST has also reintroduced concessional half-price tickets for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years.

No Change To Student Concessions
In a move aimed at cushioning the impact on younger commuters, BEST has kept its existing concession schemes unchanged. Students enrolled in private schools, colleges and universities, and under the age of 26, can still avail the existing travel pass options.

A monthly pass (60 trips) for Rs 200
A quarterly pass (180 trips) for Rs 600
A half-yearly pass (300 trips) for Rs 1,200
BEST Bus Fare Hike Impact
The fare increase will impact a large section of the city’s population, with BEST currently operating a fleet of around 2,700 buses that transport nearly 31 lakh passengers daily across Mumbai and its extended suburbs.
BEST officials stated that the revision was necessary to keep pace with rising operational costs, while also ensuring the transport system remains financially sustainable.
The hike is expected to generate additional Rs 590 crore in annual ticketing revenue, news agency PTI reported citing officials.
BEST, Mumbai's second-largest public transport service after the suburban railway network, has been facing its worst financial crisis in years. Passenger service revenue has fallen below Rs 700 crore in the last two fiscal years.
The previous fare revision took place in 2019, when non-AC bus fares ranged between Rs 5 and Rs 20, and AC bus fares were set between Rs 6 and Rs 25.
