Muharram 2025 Public Holiday On July 6 Or 7? All You Need To Know

Muharram is an important occasion for Muslims worldwide. It marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, as per the Hijri calendar. In 2025, Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is expected to be observed on July 6 or July 7, depending on the moon sighting.

While the most likely date is July 6, the observances could be marked on July 7 if the moon is not sighted. 

It is important to note that July 6 is a Sunday. So, a separate holiday on Muharram has not been declared on this day for banks, schools, government offices and stock exchanges.

However, neither the RBI nor the NSE has declared a holiday on July 7. Therefore, you can expect banks and stock exchanges to operate as scheduled on July 7.

Further, it is important to note that the Government of India has not declared July 7 as a national holiday due to Muharram. If a particular state declares July 7 as a holiday, then schools and government offices will remain closed in that region.

However, as of now, no national holiday has been declared for July 7. 

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and represents the beginning of the Islamic New Year. After Ramadan, it is the holiest month in the calendar. It is among the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran. 

During this month, warfare, violence and fighting are strictly forbidden. The name itself is derived from the Arabic word for “forbidden”.

It is a period of mourning and the 10th day, called Ashura, has special significance. Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. 

Processions and self-mortification are some of the activities commonly observed on this day. It is an occasion to offer prayers and many Muslims observe a day-long fast as well. It is an occasion that brings the community together and creates a sense of unity.
