Monsoon To Arrive In Delhi On June 22, Says IMD; Check Latest Southwest Monsoon Updates

In a post on X, the IMD said that the southwest monsoon has advanced over remaining parts of states such as Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, some parts of West Uttar Pradesh, most parts of Uttarakhand, among others.

During this period, the conditions are also becoming favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over some parts of Punjab and Haryana and Chandigarh and Delhi during the subsequent two days, the IMD noted.

Based on its observation, the conditions now seem favourable for the advancement of monsoon over the remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea and some more parts of Rajasthan. Moreover, the remaining parts of West UP and Himachal will also see an advancement of monsoon over the next two days.

The southwest monsoon is set to advance further, with conditions turning favourable for its arrival in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh within the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. This means that Delhi will likely receive its first spell of southwest monsoon by Sunday.

The Southwest Monsoon usually reaches Delhi by June 30, but this year it's expected to arrive nearly a week early in the national capital. Ahead of the arrival of the southwest monsoon, Delhi residents can expect brief rain spells as light rain showers are likely to occur in the city starting Friday.

“Light rainfall accompanied with light thunderstorm and lightning (30 to 40 km/h gusty winds) is very likely to occur at few places of Delhi ( Narela, Alipur, Burari, Rohini, Badili, Model Town, Azadpur, Pitampura, Delhi University, Mundaka, Pashchim Vihar, Punjabi Bagh, Kashmiri Gate, Patel Nagar, Red fort), NCR ( Ballabhgarh) Nuh, Aurangabad, Hodal (Haryana) Nandgaon, Barsana, Agra, Jajau (U.P.), Tizara, Khairthal, Kotputli, Alwar, Viratnagar, Nagar, Deeg, Laxmangarh, Rajgarh, Nadbai, Bharatpur, Mahawa, Mahandipur Balaji, Bayana (Rajasthan) during next two hours,” IMD Delhi said on a post on X at 1:30 p.m.

From June 20 to 23, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for all districts of Delhi. The weather agency predicted a generally cloudy sky with very light to light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph, temporarily touching 50 kmph during thunderstorms.

On Friday, Delhi residents are likely to witness thunderstorms towards evening and night.

Following brief rain showers till June 23, the national capital may experience cloudy skies with light rain and thunderstorms and lightning on June 24, the IMD said.

In addition to Delhi, a similar weather forecast has been issued for neighbouring areas like Noida, Jind, Jhajjar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Karnal and Gurugram, among others.
