Telangana is all set to host the 72nd Miss World pageant in Hyderabad this year. The state will reportedly spend Rs 200 crore on hosting the event, scheduled from May 7-31. The event aims to position the southern state as a major tourism hub, with preparations already in full swing. The event will offer a unique platform to showcase Telangana’s rich cultural tapestry including its handloom legacy, traditional art and food.
The annual international event, which started in the 1950s, seeks to promote diverse representations of beauty and humanitarian causes.
This won’t be the first time when India is hosting this popular beauty pageant. The 71st edition of Miss World was held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai last year.
The Miss World contest returned to India in 2024 after a hiatus of 28 years. Its first edition was organised in Bengaluru back in 1996. The first Miss India event was facilitated by Amitabh Bachchan’s company ABCL.
Indian Winners Of Miss World
The glamorous event has produced two of India's biggest film stars, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Both of them began their careers with a Miss World victory. While Aishwarya Rai was crowned the title in 1994, Priyanka won it in 2000.
The first Indian to claim the Miss World crown was Reita Faria. She won the prestigious beauty competition in 1966.
India's third Miss World crown came in 1997 when Diana Hayden claimed the title. This victory was followed by back-to-back wins in 1999 and 2000. Mumbai’s Yukta Mookhey secured the crown in 1999, and a year later, Priyanka Chopra won the title at the pageant's 50th anniversary.
Years later, Manushi Chillar became the most recent Miss World from India, winning it in 2017.
This year, Nandini Gupta, who was crowned Femina Miss India World 2023, will represent India at the Miss World competition.
The Czech Republic's Krystyna Pyszkova won the crown in 2024.
