Cyclone Fengal: The India Meteorological Department confirmed that the deep depression intensified into a Cyclonic Storm called Fengal at 2:30 pm on November 29.

In its latest bulletin issued at 3:11 p.m. on Saturday, the Cyclonic Storm 'Fengal' over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during the past 6 hours.

The system was located about 100 km east-northeast of Puducherry, 100 km southeast of Chennai, 190 km north-northeast of Nagappattinam and 420 km north of Trincomalee.

The Met department also mentioned that the Cyclonic storm Fengal is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during the evening of November 30.

Red, Orange and Yellow Alert For Tamil Nadu For Nov 30

IMD has also issued a red alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall on November 30.

The weather agency has issued an orange alert for Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts, and Karaikal area with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall on November 30.

The weather agency has also issued a yellow alert for Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai and Karur districts with the possibility of heavy rainfall on November 30.

The Regional Meteorological Centre Chennai has also shared the five-day heavy rainfall warning for Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and has issued a Red, Orange, and Yellow alert for coastal Tamil Nadu districts on November 30 and December 1.

Cyclone Fengal Impact

Chennai Airport Operations Suspended:

The Airport authority issued a notice confirming the suspension of airport operations for Saturday.

'In light of Cyclonic Storm 'Fengal' and the forecasted high crosswinds, as predicted by IMD, Chennai Airport operations will be suspended from 1230 hrs to 1900 hrs on 30.11.2024 following safety concerns raised by stakeholder airlines. We recommend passengers check with their respective airlines regarding their flights.'

Crop Damage:

Heavy rainfall due to Cyclone Fengal has already caused widespread damage to paddy crops in Nagapattinam district. Paddy crops in over 800 acres of land have been completely submerged.

The affected areas include Kamashwaram, Virundhamavadi, Pudupalli, Vedrappu, Vanamadevi, Vallapallam, Kallimedu, Eeravayal, and Chemboadi.

Schools Closed, Work From Home For IT Companies, Public Transport Suspension:

Due to extremely heavy rainfall warnings, schools and colleges will be shut in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur & Chengalpattu Districts on Saturday, November 30. District Collectors of other districts very heavy rainfall is expected have also been advised to issue holiday for educational institutions.

IT companies had also requested to allow their employees to work from home on Nov. 30.

The Metropolitan Chennai Corporation is closing parks and beach areas as a rain precaution.

Rainfall Warnings:

Tamil Nadu & Puducherry: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places is expected over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Nov 30 and Dec 1. Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is also likely over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Nov 29 & 30. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over these regions on December 1.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Nov 30 and Dec 1. Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Nov 30.

Rayalaseema: Light to moderate rainfall at many places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on Nov 30. Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on Nov 29.

South interior Karnataka: Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on November 30 and December 1. Heavy rainfall at isolated places is also expected on December 2.

Kerala: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is expected on on November 30 and December 1.

Chennai Weather Update

IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning likely to occur in some areas. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 26 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be around 25 degrees Celsius.

The 4-day weather forecast issued by IMD on November 29 suggests Chennai will receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next few days.
