The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has placed all Indian airports on high alert after intelligence reports that warned of potential threats or “anti-social elements”, NDTV reported.

BCAS issues similar directives every year usually around Independence Day week and during the festive season.

This year the heightened alert usually begins during Independence Day week and around the start of Navratri, and it continues until Diwali. This, however, is not officially stated.

According to reports, the security agency identified potential threats from terrorist groups and "anti-social elements" from Sept 22. to Oct. 2.

Authorities have been asked to ramp up security measures at civil aviation areas such as airports, air strips, helipads, air fields and more.

Coordination and communication will be stepped up between police, Central Industrial Security Force and intelligence bureaus, according to PTI.

The security body also issued instructions for strict identity card checks for all staff, visitors and contractors and for close circuit television cameras to be operational 24/7.
