US Stock Markets Today: S&P 500, Dow Jones Open Higher For Shortened Christmas Eve Trading

Among major companies, shares of Amazon.com Inc., Nvidia Corp., Tesla Inc, Broadcom Inc., and Blackstone Inc., witnessed gains in early trade.

All three main US stock market indices opened in green on Tuesday, as the sentiment remained positive at the Wall Street for the shortened Christmas-eve trading.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 0.38% to trade at 19,840.36. The broader index, S&P 500, surged as much as 0.17% to 5,984.30.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average also gained 0.16% to 42,906.95.

Seven of the eleven sectoral indices declined, led by consumer staples, energy, and healthcare. Consumer discretionary, information technology and communication services saw notable advances.

Among major companies, shares of Amazon.com Inc., Nvidia Corp., Tesla Inc, Broadcom Inc., and Blackstone Inc., witnessed gains in early trade. On the other hand, Intel Corp., Uber Technologies Inc., Viatris Inc., Adobe Inc., and Pfizer Inc. saw declines.

The US stock markets will shut at 1:00 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday, as the trading hours have been curtailed on account of Christmas eve. The markets will remain shut on Wednesday on account of the Christmas holiday.

Among other asset classes, the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds advanced three basis points to 4.62%.

The dollar index was little changed. The euro was nearly flat at $1.0409 and British pound rose 0.3% to $1.2574. The Japanese yen moved marginally to 157.21 per dollar

In the commodities market, spot gold declined 0.05% to $2,611.14 an ounce. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, advanced 1.12%. It was trading near $73.4 per barrel.

Bitcoin, the world's largest traded cryptocurrency rose 2.9% to $96,577.45. Investors in the digital asset will keenly watch whether it could reclaim the $100,000-mark in the coming days.
