The Indian equity benchmark indices closed lower for the second consecutive day as Wipro, Sun Pharma, Jio Finance along with others weighed on the index. The NSE Nifty 50 benchmark ended 75 points, or 0.31% lower at 24,574, and the 30-stock BSE Sensex ended 166.26 points, or 0.21% lower at 80,543.
Shares of HDFC Life marked gains of 1.96% while M&M, Bharat Electronics and Adani Ports gained over 0.5% that contributed to the gains of the benchmark index Nifty 50.
Nine out of 12 sectors ended in the red, with Nifty Pharma, IT Realty, Media declining the most. Sectors like Finance, Bank closed with gains in today's session.
The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended 1% and 1.14% lower, respectively. Market breadth was skewed in the favour of sellers. Around 2,700 stocks declined and 1,351 stocks advanced while 146 remained unchanged on BSE.
