The Asia Power Index evaluates 27 countries and territories across various metrics, including economic strength, diplomatic influence, military capability, and future potential. The United States tops the index with a score of 81.7, followed by China at 72.7.

India’s third-place ranking highlights the country's significant rise in the post-pandemic era, driven by robust economic recovery and increasing geopolitical influence. Next in the line are Japan and Australia with a score of 38.9 and 31.9 respectively.

Russia ranks sixth (31.1) in the index, followed by South Korea (31), Singapore (26.4), Indonesia (22.3) and Thailand (19.8).

India’s ascent is primarily attributed to its strong economic performance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a notable 4.2-point increase in its economic capability. The country’s vast population, coupled with impressive GDP growth, strengthens its position as the world’s third-largest economy in purchasing power parity (PPP).

Despite its growing economic influence, the Lowy Institute suggests that India's full potential remains somewhat underutilised. The think tank points out that while India’s resources position it for greater influence, its global clout has yet to fully match the power it could wield in the international arena.

India's leadership in regional security and its participation in key international dialogues, such as its central role in the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue), are also crucial factors in its ranking. India's strategic, non-aligned stance enables it to navigate complex global dynamics, further cementing its status as a significant global player, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Asia Power Index highlights ongoing evolution as a global power with the potential to shape the future of the region and beyond.
