Foreign portfolio investors stayed net sellers for the third straight session in the cash market on Tuesday. They were net sellers in index futures and options, while they were net buyers in stock futures and options.
FIIs In Cash Market
Foreign portfolio investors stayed net sellers for the third straight session on Tuesday and sold stocks worth Rs 1,491.5 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
Domestic institutional investors stayed buyers for the 15th consecutive session and bought stocks worth Rs 1,615.3 crore.
So far in January, the FPIs have sold shares worth Rs 10,215 crore, according to the National Securities Depository Ltd.
Through 2024, overseas investors have been net sellers and collectively offloaded stocks worth Rs 7,078.3 crore, according to data from NSDL compiled by NDTV Profit. The DIIs stayed net buyers through the year and bought stocks worth Rs 8,282.8 crore.
However, according to data from the NSDL, which is updated till the previous trading day, foreign institutions have been net buyers of Rs 3,079.60 crore worth of Indian equities so far in 2025.
FIIs In Futures And Options
Ahead of the Jan. 25 expiry, the value of outstanding positions—also called open interest in the derivatives segment—has increased for the FIIs in the Nifty futures. The FIIs' long-to-short ratio in index futures remains at 20:80.
The FIIs sold index options worth Rs 18,112.5 crore and index futures worth Rs 35.34 crore. They bought stock futures worth Rs 2403.22 crore and stock options worth Rs 1059.5 crore.
FII Contract Value
The value of the total Nifty 50 futures open interest in the market increased by Rs 596.4 crore at the end of January expiry from Rs 29,507 crore a day earlier to Rs 30,103.4 crore.
F&O Cues
The Nifty January futures were up by 0.27% to 23,785.45 at a premium of 78 points, with the open interest up by 1.70%.
The open interest distribution for the Nifty 50 Jan. 9 expiry series indicated most activity at 24,500 call strikes, with the 23,000 put strikes having maximum open interest.
Long-Short Ratio
The total long-short ratio for foreign investors fell to 1.28 from 1.30 in the previous session.
