The government will open an online portal for importers to apply for permits to source IT hardware like laptops and tablets for next year on Dec. 13. The window will be open till Dec. 15, 2025.
"Importers shall apply in Import Management System for Import Authorisation on DGFT website," a notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said on Wednesday.
Products in the import restriction category include laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra small form factor computers and servers.
In September, the government extended the window for importers to apply for permits to source IT hardware till December and allowed validity of permits issued till Sept. 30 till the end of the year.
Importers would be required to apply for fresh authorisations from January.
As per the DGFT notification, any permit issued for import of restricted IT hardware under IMS will be valid till December 2025. Importers are allowed to submit multiple applications in the year.
"Any request for amendment arising during the validity of such authorisation may be submitted on DGFT website," the agency said.
India notified import restrictions on laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers in August 2023, mandating the importers of these products to apply for licenses from the government for future consignments. The step was taken to curb imports from China.
In November 2023, the import management system was designed to boost domestic production and reduce dependency on imports.
The import authorisation would have to specify the quantity and value of the imports. However, importers can apply for multiple authorisations and amend the quantities mentioned if the overall value of the import authorisation remains unchanged.
Notably, the central government has encouraged domestic production of IT hardware under the 'Make In India' initiative to curb costly imports. It plans to replicate success in smartphone manufacturing and assembly.
India has imported $4.92 billion worth of IT hardware in fiscal 2024, as per official data. China was the main import source, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong.
