The 1986-era terminal 2 of Delhi Airport will be shut for about four to six months, starting at the end of April, for a major overhaul exercise.

Under the plan, the Indira Gandhi International Airport—spearheaded by GMR Airports Ltd.—will revamp its existing infrastructure to meet the growing passenger traffic and undergo modernisation in a bid to create a world-class hub for travellers, the company said in a release on Friday.

"The refurbishment of the four-decade-old terminal 2 is the need of the hour," said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO, Delhi International Airport Ltd.

T2 is being renovated after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had flagged the need for it.

"The temporary closure of Terminal 2 is expected to cause minimal disruption to operations, as the newly developed Terminal 1 will absorb the additional load, ensuring continued service to passengers," it said. "With the terminal's projected passenger capacity expected to reach its peak by financial year 2025-26, these enhancements will be crucial in supporting the growing demand for air travel, particularly for domestic passengers. This initiative is a key part of DIAL’s long-term strategy."

T1 will have a capacity of 40 million passengers annually upon completion of the ongoing repair of the terminal—a part of which collapsed last June.

The company said that the refurbished T2 will have new passenger boarding bridges, and aerobridges will have autonomous docking technology, the first of its kind in India. It will also have modern ceilings and skylight designs for a more appealing environment, besides advanced flooring and better road connectivity for passengers’ convenience. As of now, only T3 handled both domestic and international flights in Delhi, while T1 and T2 are all domestic.
