India's nodal cybersecurity agency, Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, has issued a high-severity alert warning of rapidly evolving cyber threats fuelled by advances in frontier artificial intelligence models. The advisory comes amid growing unease in the tech ecosystem following “Mythos” jitters, industry shorthand for the disruptive potential of next-generation AI systems.
In its latest note titled ‘Defending Against Frontier AI Driven Cyber Risks', released on April 26, CERT-In cautioned that the maturing capabilities of advanced AI systems are reshaping the threat landscape. These systems can now autonomously detect vulnerabilities in widely used software, analyse source code at scale, and orchestrate complex, multi-stage cyberattacks with minimal human intervention.
According to CERT-In, such AI-driven tools can chain together exploits across systems, enabling attackers to compromise enterprise networks end-to-end. This marks a significant shift from traditional cyber threats, where attacks typically required manual effort and specialised expertise. The automation and speed offered by frontier AI models drastically lower the barrier to entry for cybercriminals while amplifying the scale and precision of attacks.

The advisory places particular emphasis on the risks faced by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which often lack robust cybersecurity infrastructure. CERT-In urged these organisations to strengthen their defensive posture by deploying advanced threat detection systems, ensuring continuous monitoring of networks, and maintaining comprehensive logs of system activity for forensic analysis.
It also recommended timely vulnerability disclosure and patch management practices to minimise exposure to newly discovered exploits. With AI systems capable of identifying weaknesses faster than ever, delays in addressing vulnerabilities could significantly increase the risk of breaches.
The alert further highlights the importance of adopting secure coding practices and conducting regular security audits. Organisations have been advised to integrate AI-aware security frameworks that can anticipate and counter adversarial use of machine learning tools.
CERT-In stressed that log preservation will play a critical role in incident response, particularly as AI-enabled attacks become more sophisticated and harder to trace. Maintaining detailed logs allows organisations to reconstruct attack pathways and mitigate damage more effectively.
The advisory reflects a broader global concern around the dual-use nature of advanced AI technologies. While such systems offer transformative benefits across industries, their misuse in cyber warfare and digital crime is emerging as a key policy and operational challenge.
