Liverpool player Diogo Jota died in a traffic accident in Spain on Thursday, as per media reports. The accident took place near the Zamora region of Sanabria.

The Portuguese footballer was travelling with his brother Andre — a professional footballer from Penafiel in Portugal — when their car went off the road. The car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another car, reported BBC.

Witnesses said the car was engulfed in flames, and the fire even spread to the nearby vegetation, local media said.

Jota got married to Rute Cardoso just 10 days back. In a post shared on the couple's social media, the pair wrote: "Yes, forever."

Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation, reacted to the news. "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, this morning, in Spain," the official statement read.

Spanish authorities confirmed the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. They said the accident happened in the early hours, 00:30 local time, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. "The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed."
