Thousands of WhatsApp users faced disruptions on Friday evening, with messages remaining undelivered and connectivity issues reported across India. Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, did not immediately issue a statement on the outage.
According to Down Detector, a website that tracks online service disruptions, over 15,000 complaints were logged regarding WhatsApp's performance around 9:16 pm on Friday. Users reported issues with sending and receiving messages, with some even trying to restart their devices or toggle flight mode in hopes of fixing the problem.
The outage triggered a flood of reactions on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where #WhatsAppDown quickly became a trending topic.
"Stop toggling your flight mode on/off. Stop refreshing your WhatsApp. It’s not your network; WhatsApp is down," one user said on X.
This is not the first time WhatsApp has experienced technical difficulties in recent months. In November, the app suffered a widespread disruption, affecting its web version globally. During that outage, 58% of users reported issues with WhatsApp Web, while 31% had problems with the app itself.
A more severe disruption occurred in April, when WhatsApp went down just before midnight, affecting both individual and business accounts. The outage led to over 80,000 complaints on Down Detector within a short period. At the time, WhatsApp acknowledged the issue, stating, X: "We know some people are experiencing issues right now; we're working on getting things back to 100% for everyone as quickly as possible."
Meta's other platforms—Instagram and Facebook—have also faced technical glitches in recent months. In December, Instagram saw over 70,000 complaints, while Facebook experienced more than 100,000 reports of disruptions.
