India's Unified Payments Interface experienced intermittent technical issues on Wednesday evening, disrupting payment transactions for thousands of users. The National Payments Corporation of India acknowledged the glitch and later confirmed that the issue had been resolved.
"NPCI had faced intermittent technical issues owing to which UPI had partial decline. The same has been addressed now and the system has stabilised. Regret the inconvenience," the payments body said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Down Detector, a platform that tracks online service disruptions, over 3,039 complaints about UPI-related issues were logged at around 8:00 p.m. Of these, 81% of users reported payment failures, 14% faced fund transfer issues, and 5% had trouble accessing UPI apps.
As with previous outages, users took to social media to report the disruption, sharing their experiences and asking if others were facing similar problems.
Netizens, reacting to the issue, flooded the internet with memes.
Another user tweeted, "When UPI is down, and you tell the shopkeeper 'bhai kal bhej dunga.'"
UPI, which processes billions of transactions monthly, has become India's dominant digital payments system, making any disruption widely felt. In January 2025, UPI transactions crossed the 16.9 billion-mark, the highest growth in a single month. The total value of these transactions was Rs 23.48 lakh crore.
