Man Retires At 45 With Rs 4.7 Crore From Simple Job And SIPs, Viral Reddit Post Leaves Users In Awe

A man’s post on Reddit is making waves on social media for his uncle’s unusual approach to personal finance that helped him retire at the age of 45 with a Rs 4.7 crore corpus.

He explained that his uncle did not own a business or was involved in trading. "Just a boring job that paid decently," he said.

His uncle lived in the same 2BHK for 30 years, rode a scooter and took one vacation to Kerala. He never had any side hustles or indulged in any fancy lifestyle upgrades.

"When I was 24 and barely saving anything, he just said, 'You don’t need to earn more. You need to save early'," the Redditor said.

His uncle's smart savings began with investing in a mutual fund in 1998. At the time when mutual fund investments were uncommon, he also initiated a systematic investment plan (SIP) of Rs 500 per month.  

"Whenever his salary went up, he increased it. Rs 1,000, then Rs 2,000, then Rs 5,000," the post read.

By 2010, he was investing Rs 20,000 a month and maintained consistency in his financial commitment,

"When he retired at 45, I asked him how he pulled it off. He handed me his passbook and a sheet he printed from CAMS," the post read further.

The man further said that his uncle maintained a simple lifestyle but now travels every weekend with his wife. 

"His kids have no idea about his net worth. He’s my go-to for anything practical in life," the post concluded.

The post has now gone viral with over 9,000 upvotes on Reddit. Many users appreciated the man’s ability to stay consistent for more than two decades. However, some people also highlighted that he “compromised” a lot.

"At 45 years, I don't think he will have the same energy and conviction to live and enjoy the wealth," a comment read.

"If someone is genuinely content in a 2BHK and on a scooter, maybe that is enjoyment. Not everyone needs Goa weekends and EMIs to prove they’re living," another user said.
