As the holy month of Ramzan draws to a close, the Muslim community across the world is eagerly awaiting the confirmation of the exact date for Eid-ul-Fitr 2025. The festival marks the end of a month-long period of fasting and devotion. The date is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. As such, the date remains uncertain until the crescent moon is sighted, making lunar observations crucial in determining the day of celebration.
Eid-Ul-Fitr 2025: When Will It Be Celebrated?
Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to fall on either Mar. 31 (Monday) or Apr. 1 (Tuesday) in 2025, depending on when the crescent moon is sighted. The official calendar of the Indian government lists Mar. 31 as a public holiday for the festival. But since Islamic months follow the lunar cycle, the final date will be established based on moon sightings in different regions.
Crescent Moon Sightings In Various Regions
In countries such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the search for the crescent moon will begin on the evening of Mar. 30. This date corresponds to the 29th day of Ramzan in the Islamic year 1446 AH. If the moon is sighted that evening, Eid will be observed on Mar. 31.
If not, Ramzan will complete 30 days, and Eid will be celebrated on Apr. 1.
In Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the UK and other parts of the Middle East and the Western world, moon sighting efforts will take place on Mar. 29. If the crescent is visible, Eid will be on Ma. 30. Otherwise, it will shift to Mar. 31.
UAE’s Official Holiday Announcement
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has declared its public holiday schedule in anticipation of Eid. If Ramadan concludes on Mar. 30, the official holiday will span from that day till Apr. 1. But should the fasting month extend to Mar. 31, the holiday period will shift to Apr. 2.
Why Does Eid Depend On The Moon?
Islamic festivals follow a lunar calendar, where each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. This makes Eid-ul-Fitr’s date variable each year.
For 2025, if the crescent moon appears on Mar. 30, Eid will be observed the next day, Mar. 31. If the moon is sighted on Mar. 31, then Eid will be marked on Apr. 1.
With regional variations in moon sightings, confirmation of Eid’s exact date will be made closer to the end of Ramzan.
