Photos Of Microsoft And Asus’ Xbox-Branded Handheld Leaked

According to reports by VideoCardz and the Indonesian site 91mobiles, leaked images of the Xbox-branded PC handheld called Project Kennan have surfaced online. These images are connected to the Federal Communications Commission filing for the WiFi module for the devices.

The Verge noted that Asus typically unveils its hardware at Computex, which will start from May 20 this year. The Asus ROG Ally 2 could be launched there as well.

Previously, The Verge had also reported that Microsoft was collaborating with Asus to create an Xbox-branded handheld with the codename “Project Kennan”. The leaked photos are of the same device.

The photos show two ROG Ally consoles, one is black and the other is white. 91mobiles found that currently two models are under development and connected the information from the Indonesian certification office with the US FCC listing. 

According to VideoCardz, the black version is designed for much higher-level performance. It will come with an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip with eight cores and a Thermal Design Power of 36 W. It will support LPDDR5-8533 memory. The listing mentions “2048Mx32”, indicating a memory capacity of 64 GB, but it later also mentions “Micron 32 GB”, as per VideoCardz.

The white version comes with an AMD 4-core 20 W (AMD Aeirth Plus) chipset. It is expected to have 16 GB of storage capacity.

Since no photos were available with the device powered on, it is not known if the display has undergone any changes. The rear comes with bigger grips and the screen bezels remain the same as those seen on the ROG Ally X.

It is uncertain if Microsoft will unveil an Xbox OS meant for gaming handhelds. VideoCardz notes that it could also include a dedicated button to start the Xbox app on Windows.

The handheld will come with two USB Type-C connectors on the top. The photos indicate that the device could be thick and bulky, though VideoCardz notes that it may not affect the gaming experience.
