Google has showcased its Android XR-powered smart glasses on the first day of Google I/O 2025. Android XR glasses feature a camera, microphones, and speakers, and can be paired with smartphones, allowing users to access apps “without ever having to reach in your pocket,” the company said.

An optional in-lens display discreetly delivers useful information. When you pair these glasses with Gemini, they can see and hear what you do, which helps them comprehend your context, remember your priorities, and more.

Google’s preview demonstrated how Android XR glasses will function in everyday situations, such as sending messages, scheduling appointments, requesting directions, taking pictures, and more. The company also demonstrated a live language translation between two persons to show how these glasses could overcome language barriers.

Sneak Peek At Xreal’s Android XR-Based Aura AR Glasses

Google has collaborated with Chinese smart glasses company Xreal to create the first eyewear to run an augmented reality version of Android XR. Xreal and Google unveiled a new Android XR device they call Project Aura to developers at Google I/O.

The device will reportedly have Gemini built in and be powered by a Qualcomm SoC optimised for Android XR. It will offer a large field-of-view through cameras integrated on the hinges and nose bridge, and feature buttons and microphones in the temple area.

Android XR Partnerships With Warby Parker, Gentle Monster

Google also announced that it is collaborating with eyewear companies, beginning with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, to develop fashionable glasses powered by Android XR. Additional partners, such as Kering Eyewear, in the future will provide users with even more smart glass choices.

The company is also expanding its collaboration with Samsung as part of its effort to bring Android XR to glasses in addition to headsets. Google and Samsung are working together to develop a reference hardware and software architecture that will allow companies to produce high-quality glasses. Developers can start building for this platform later this year, Google said.
