Punjab Kings will be hoping to change their fortunes in Indian Premier League 2025 with a new captain and coach. The team has undergone a complete overhaul, bringing in Ricky Ponting as head coach and Shreyas Iyer as captain.
PBKS spent a whopping Rs 26.75 crore to sign Iyer following a fierce bidding contest with Delhi Capitals. Iyer led KRR to the IPL title last year.
At PBKS, Iyer will reunite with head coach Ricky Ponting, with whom he shared a successful stint at Delhi Capitals, guiding the team to the 2020 IPL final.
Punjab Kings bought pacer Arshdeep Singh and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for Rs 18 crore each. Arshdeep was purchased using the Right to Match (RTM) card. Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and South Africa’s Marco Jansen were bought for Rs 11 crore and Rs 7 crore respectively. PBKS retained Prabhsimran Singh for Rs 4 crore and Shashank Singh for Rs 5.5 crore.

'Iyer, Arshdeep, Chahal Were Non-Negotiables'
Australian great Ricky Ponting last month revealed that Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal were "non-negotiables" for him at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
"There were three players that I wanted to bring in. One who has been at Punjab Kings for three or four years -- Arshdeep Singh," Ponting explained his strategic approach at 'The Howie Games' podcast.
"I also wanted to bring in a captain who I have worked with before and who has had a lot of success. So, we went after Shreyas Iyer. I also wanted to bring in Yuzi. So the Indian guys that we have are perfect," he said.
He further added that while some adjustments were necessary during the auction, his primary focus remained on building a well-balanced squad.
"And then, we had to make a few tweaks as the auction went on to make sure we ended up with a really good squad. I am trying to make things different and rebuild and have the right people around me. But these three were non-negotiables," he said.
