Sturgeon Moon In August 2025: Moon To Shine Ahead Of Rare Planetary Alignment, Check Date And Time

The full Sturgeon Moon will light up the skies on Aug. 9, marking the second full moon of summer 2025 in the Northern Hemisphere. Though the moment of fullness occurs simultaneously globally, the exact local time will differ by location. Just a few days later, on Aug. 12, the moon will appear near Saturn and Neptune in the night sky, Space.com reported.

A full Moon occurs when the Moon is completely lit by the Sun and appears like an illuminated disc from Earth. Different regions will be able to see the full Moon at different times, including some in daylight. For instance, in London, the full Moon will occur at 8:55 a.m. local time; in Delhi at 2:25 p.m. local time and in Los Angeles, at 12:55 a.m. on Aug. 9.

While various regions have different names for it, the term 'Sturgeon Moon' comes from the time sturgeon fish were the most abundant in the Great Lakes of North America. The name reflects sturgeon entering shallow waters in August, according to the BBC. It is also known as the Grain Moon and Corn Moon.

Three days after reaching its full phase, the Moon will pass close to the planets Saturn and Neptune in the night sky. According to the report, the Moon will pass about 3.5 degrees north of Saturn at 12:01 UT. In the Northern Hemisphere, the moon will be roughly 8 degrees high in the eastern sky, with Saturn just below it at about 6.5 degrees, slightly to the right.

In the Southern Hemisphere, their positions will appear reversed— the Moon will be about 6.5 degrees high, with Saturn above it at 8 degrees, and to the right of the Moon.

On the same day, the Moon is expected to pass within 3.5 degrees of Neptune, though the distant planet will not be visible to the naked eye.
