A major fire broke out early this morning on the top floor of the Raj Textile Market in the Parvat Patiya area of Surat, prompting a large-scale emergency response. The blaze was reported around 7:00 a.m., and fire engines rushed to the scene immediately.

Authorities confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far, as the fire erupted during early morning hours when the market was largely empty.

More than 20 fire tenders, including hydraulic escalators, were deployed as firefighters work to bring the flames under control. Officials say the operation is challenging due to the nature of the textile market, where most materials are synthetic, making the fire harder to contain.

Surat is widely regarded as the powerhouse of India’s man-made-fibre textile industry. On a typical day, the city’s mills and power-loom clusters produce roughly 25–30 million metres of fabric, as per Fibre2Fashion data.

In some estimates — reflecting broader processing and finishing activities — daily output even reaches 40 million metres. As a result, the industry in Surat supplies approximately 40% of India’s man-made fabric output, making it the central hub for synthetic textiles nationally.

This industrial scale supports a vast ecosystem of manufacturing and allied services. Reports mention over 40,000 textile units operating in the city, including weaving, dyeing/printing/processing, and finishing — spread across multiple industrial clusters such as Pandesara, Sachin, Kadodara, and Palsana.

Such integration of raw-material sourcing, weaving, processing and finishing not only enables high production volume, but also ensures that fabrics from everyday wear to premium synthetic textiles are manufactured and dispatched from Surat, giving it a nationwide reach.
