Delhi Weather Updates: Overnight Thunderstorm Disrupts Electricity Supply Across Capital

Around 49 flights, including 17 international ones, were diverted at the country's largest IGI airport in New Delhi due to the thunderstorm.

A thunderstorm combined with incessant rainfall hit Delhi during the wee hours of Sunday, thereby impacting the to and fro flight operations from the national capital. The adverse weather conditions left dozens of trees and electricity poles uprooted across the city, while also causing water-logging in various localities.

Overnight Storm Disrupts Power Supply Across Delhi

Power supply was disrupted in many parts of the national capital due to damage caused to electrical installations by the overnight heavy rains and thunderstorm, discoms said on Sunday.

Power supply was disrupted in parts of Bawana, Ghogha village, Sector 25 Rohini, DSIIDC Narela, Sultanpuri, Sector 22 Rohini, Karala, Badli, Siraspur, Avantika, Mangolpuri, RU Block Pitampura and Rithala village among others in north Delhi, said a spokesperson of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL).

Heavy Rains Alert Issued In Konkan, Western Maharashtra

The weather department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Konkan and western Maharashtra. This came shortly after the monsoon winds were confirmed to have landed in southern Maharashtra, following a quick progress in Kerala and Goa.

Portion Of Airport Roof Collapses After Incessant Rains

A portion of the Delhi airport roof collapsed following incessant rainfall, NDTV reported. Several flights to and from the airport were diverted on Sunday after the national capital faced a thunderstorm.

Monsoon Progressing Rapidly Into Various States

The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into parts of Karnataka, Goa, some parts of Maharashtra, and some more parts of Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Karnataka including Bengaluru, and some parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu over the next three days, it added.

Delhi Weather LIVE Updates: Train Operations Impacted

Rough weather in Delhi has also affected the operation of trains. Due to strong winds and rain, railway wires broke at 11 places, NDTV reported. About 20 trains and 6 goods trains were affected.

The services were affected due to breakage of railway electrical wires, the news channel said, adding that trees fell on railway wires due to strong winds, due to which the line broke.

Moti Bagh, Minto Road, Delhi Cantonment and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg were among the areas that were partially submerged due to the massive rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department said the city's primary weather station recorded winds gusting up to 82 kmph and 81.2 mm of rain in six hours -- between 11.30 pm and 5.30 am.

Flight Operations Hit

Flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here were disrupted due to inclement weather.

IndiGo, the country's largest airline in terms of market share, issued an advisory for the travellers. "Following last night’s weather in #Delhi, airside congestion is still impacting flights. Please plan ahead and check your flight status here: https://bit.ly/31paVKQ. Thank you for your patience and understanding! (sic)," it posted on social media.

A similar advisory was also issued by Air India:

The India Meteorological Department said the city's primary weather station recorded winds gusting up to 82 kmph and 81.2 mm of rain in six hours -- between Saturday 11.30 pm and 5.30 am on Sunday.

A source said that 49 flights, including 17 international flights, were diverted between 11:30 pm on Saturday and 4 am on Sunday due to bad weather.

In a post on X at 3:59 am, IndiGo said adverse weather conditions in Delhi led to temporary disruptions in flight operations.

'While the weather is gradually easing, some airside congestion remains. We assure you that flight movements are steadily resuming as conditions permit,' the airline said.

At 5:54 am it said in an X post that flight operations are back to normal with clearer skies over Delhi.
