Buddha Purnima 2025 Bank Holiday: Banks will remain shut in many states in the country on Monday on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, according to the Reserve Bank of India holiday calendar.
Bank Holiday On Monday In Multiple States On May 12
Banks will be closed in Tripura, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Delhi, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh for Buddha Purnima. The closures apply to both public and private sector banks.
Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Gautama Buddha. It’s a public holiday in many states.
Weekend Bank Closures Add To Extended Break
The holiday on Monday, May 12, comes after a holiday on May 10, as it was the second Saturday of the month, a designated non-working day, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. Banks also remained closed on Sunday, May 11, as part of the regular weekend closure.
According to the RBI holiday calendar, "All scheduled and non-scheduled banks will observe public holidays on second and fourth Saturdays," as mentioned on the central bank’s official website.
Working Saturdays In May
The month of May 2025 features five Saturdays, with banks operating on three of them. Banks were open on May 3 and will also function on May 17 and 31. In addition to the closure on May 10, banks will observe another holiday on Saturday, May 24.
Earlier this month, banks remained closed on May 1 in Maharashtra for Maharashtra Day, and across several states, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Manipur, Kerala, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Goa, and Bihar, for Labour Day. On May 7, banks in Assam shut down for the Panchayat Election 2025, while May 9 saw bank closures in West Bengal for Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti.
Upcoming Bank Holidays In May
Apart from the holiday on May 12, bank customers should take note of these upcoming region-specific holidays too this month:
May 16: Banks in Sikkim will close for Sikkim State Day.
May 26: Tripura will observe a holiday for the birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam.
May 29: Banks in Himachal Pradesh will close for Maharana Pratap Jayanti.
With multiple regional holidays and weekend closures in May, customers are advised to complete important banking transactions in advance.
