US Stock Market Today: S&P 500, Nasdaq Trade Little Changed As Year-End Cheer Eludes Wall Street

The main US stock market indices opened little changed on Tuesday after closing lower in the previous session, evading the year-end festive sentiment so far.

S&P 500 opened 0.02% or 1.62 points lower at 6,904.12, after closing 0.35% lower on Monday.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite opened 0.05% or 11.78 points lower at 23,462.57, and Dow Jones Industrial Average opened 0.04% or 18.22 points lower at 48,443.71.

Of the magnificent seven stock, bellwether company Nvidia Corp. was down 0.48% to $187.32, Apple Inc. declined 0.15% at $273.34, Google-parent Alphabet Inc. was up 0.06% at $313.91, Tesla Inc. fell 0.77% to $456.12 and Meta Platforms rose 1.14% to $666.062, at 10:03 am (EST).

Besides this, Amazon Inc. traded 0.25% lower at $231.47 and Microsoft Corp. traded 0.30% higher at $488.53.

After the US markets opened, only four out of the 11 sectoral indices traded in the green and seven traded in the red. Gains were led by Energy and Communications sectors, whereas Consumer Discretionary and Information Technology led the decline.

In the commodities segment, spot silver and gold prices surged on Tuesday. The white metal traded 4.51% higher at $75.37 an ounce, while the yellow metal traded 0.86% higher at $4,369 an ounce.

The crude basket also saw an uptick, with West Texas Intermediate futures trading 0.59% higher at $58.41 a barrel and Brent Crude trading 0.42% higher at $61.75.

The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed. The euro fell 0.1% to $1.1760. Similarly, the British pound fell 0.3% to $1.3478 and the Japanese yen fell 0.1% to 156.26 per dollar.

Bitcoin, the largest-traded cryptocurrency, rose 0.8% to $87,879.43
