The benchmark equity indices closed lower for the second consecutive session on Monday, dragged down by shares of HDFC Bank Ltd. and Reliance Industries Ltd.
The NSE Nifty 50 ended 34.1 points or 0.14% lower at 24,716.6, while the BSE Sensex closed 77.26 points or 0.09% down at 81,373.75. During the day, the Nifty fell 0.91% to trade at 24,526.15 and the Sensex declined 0.98% to trade at 80,654.26 mark.
Shares of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Eternal Ltd. were the top gainers.
Hero MotoCorp and HDFC Life Insurance Co. were among the biggest laggards.
In terms of points contribution, M&M and Adani Ports were among stocks that led the gains in the index.
HDFC Bank and RIL dragged the index the most.
On the NSE, nine out of the 15 sectors ended in the green, with the Nifty Realty, PSU Bank and FMCG being the top gainers.
In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap outperformed the Sensex as the MidCap ended 0.53% higher and SmallCap gained 0.31%.
The market breadth was skewed in favour of buyers, as 2,059 stocks advanced, 2,048 declined and 171 remained unchanged on the BSE.
