The government on Wednesday appointed Sandeep Pradhan, an Indian Revenue Service officer, as a Whole‑Time Member (WTM) on the board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India. He will serve a term of three years from the date of taking charge.

"The Central Government hereby appoints Shri Sandip Pradhan, IRS (IT:1990), Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), Pune as Whole Time Member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier," a notification from the Department of Economic Affairs said.

Pradhan is a 1990 batch IRS officer currently serving as the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) in Pune. An IIT Kanpur graduate, he also served as Director General of the Sports Authority of India for over five years and has held the position of CEO of the Khelo India programme.

The SEBI has four Whole-Time Member positions, with key regulatory and supervisory responsibilities divided among them.

Currently, the market regulator has two WTMs — Amarjeet Singh, a former Executive Director at SEBI, and Kamlesh Chandra Varshney, a former Joint Secretary (Tax Policy and Legislation) in the Department of Revenue.

The SEBI also has two part-time members — Deepti Gaur Mukerjee and Anuradha Thakur.

Pradhan's appointment comes after Ananth Narayan G's tenure as WTM ended in October. Ashwani Bhatia's term also ended in May.
