The Indian stock exchanges are observing a shortened trading week due to two public holidays. Markets remained closed on Monday, April 14, for Ambedkar Jayanti and will again be shut on Friday, April 18, in observance of Good Friday.
Good Friday is a Christian observance marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is a gazetted holiday in several Indian states. Hence, government offices, banks, public institutions, and schools, etc, will remain closed on this day.
Maharashtra will also observe a public holiday on the occasion. This means that the Mumbai-based stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange and the BSE, will also remain closed. Trading in equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGR) will remain suspended on April 18.
Many states, such as Goa, Mizoram, Manipur, Goa, and Kerala among others observe Good Friday as a significant religious holiday, with churches holding special prayers to mark the day.
