Explained: When Can Jane Street Start Trading On Dalal Street?

For Jane Street to start trading again in India, there are five primary restrictions that need to be removed by SEBI.

Jane Street deposited Rs 4843.50 crore on Friday in an escrow account in favour of SEBI, as mandated by the Indian market regulator. However, the Wall Street high-frequency trader will only be able to start trading on Dalal Street after SEBI lifts its restrictions.

The market regulator, through its speaking order, had come with an interim order on July 3, 2025, that barred the Wall Street firm from trading in the Indian market. Jane Street mounted a defence and requested SEBI to lift certain restrictions imposed in the interim order, according to a statement, adding that SEBI is examining the request.

"Entities are restrained from accessing the securities market and are further prohibited from buying, selling, or otherwise dealing in securities, direct or indirect," said SEBI. The ban was expected to in place till the money is deposited in the escrow account.

What Are The Restricitons On Jane Street?

For Jane Street to start trading again in India, there are five primary restrictions that need to be removed by SEBI. They are:

  1. Allowing access to markets and dealing in securities.

  2. Free fund movements through bank accounts.

  3. Custodians' restrictions with respect to debits to be allowed.

  4. Depositories restrictions with respect to debits should be allowed.

  5. RTA (Registrar and Transfer Agent) should be allowed to transfer or redeem securities.

Jane Street specialises in high-frequency trading, ETFs, options and operates globally: New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Amsterdam trading options.

Market watchers expect the SEBI investigation to take another 6-9 months before a final report and show cause notice will be issued to Jane Street.
