Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said that India has been granted exemption from US sanction on Iran's Chabahar Port for six months. This port is important as it provides access to Afghanistan and Central Asia-Eastern Russia.
The extension comes after the expiry of the US sanctions on Tuesday. During the extensive discussions, India has emphasised the necessity of maintaining the port's operations in order to maintain the regional connectivity initiatives.
India in 2024 had entered into a decade-long agreement to operate Chabahar port. The contract between Indian Ports Global Ltd. and Iran's Port and Maritime Organisation is vital as it strengthens India-Afghanistan economic relations and delivers humanitarian assistance. The Taliban administration has shown strong interest in utilising the port for its international connections.
In addition, MEA said that it will help support Afghanistan in sustainable water management.
"As emphasised in the recently adopted India-Afghanistan Joint Statement, India stands ready to support Afghanistan in its sustainable water management, including on hydroelectric projects. As you know, there is a history of cooperation, including the Salma Dam in Herat province," MEA said on Thursday.
Discussing Pakistan and Afghanistan relations the MEA reiterated that Pakistan is infuriated with Afghanistan as it is exercising sovereignty over its own territories.
"Pakistan seems to think that it has the right to practice cross-border terrorism with impunity. Its neighbors find it unacceptable" the MES added.
The ministry also added, "India remains fully committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Afghanistan."
