Taking a walk down the memory lane, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal recollected his father's reaction when he shared his start-up idea with him nearly two decades ago.
At the 'Vishesh Sampark Abhiyan' event on Monday hosted by Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Goyal spoke about his start-up journey.
The video of Goyal's speech struck a chord on social media. Goyal says when he shared the start-up idea with his father, the reaction he got was: "Jaanta hain tera baap kaun hai."
He explained that they come from a humble background in a small village of Punjab.
The Zomato CEO added that in the last 16 years, a lot has changed in the start-up landscape. He thanked the government for its initiatives in assisting start-ups and hoped that it would continue to do so.
The post shared by the union minister read, "Deepinder Goyal, Zomato. When I started Zomato in 2008, my father used to say "tu janta hai tera baap kaun hai" as my dad thought I could never do a start-up given our humble background. This government and their initiatives enabled a small-town boy like me to build something like Zomato, which employs lakhs of people today!"
The event was attended by several start-up leaders, intellectuals, innovators, and IT experts.
YouTuber Gaurav Chaudhary (Technical Guruji), Abhiraj Singh Bhal- the founder of Urban Company, Rajan Anandan- managing director of Peak XV Partners, Rohan Verma- CEO of Map My India, and Pankaj Mohindroo- chairman of the Indian Cellular Association were among the attendees.
Goyal co-founded Zomato in 2008 and its technology platform was launched in 2010. Over the years, the food delivery company has listed 1.4 million restaurants, 285,000 delivery partners, and 12,000 restaurant partners, according to a report in Your Story.
Zomato has a presence in more than 1,000 cities and it has acquired 45% of the food delivery market in India, the report added.
