Maharashtra Electricity Bills To Get 26% Cheaper In Five Years, Says Fadnavis

Electricity bills in Maharashtra could be lower after a plan by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. to reduce tariffs was approved by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission. This is the first time electricity tariffs have been slashed in the state.

The development was communicated to the public by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis through this post on the social media platform X.

Power tariff will be reduced 10% in the first year. A plan for total reduction of 26% over the next five years has been approved.

Those who consume less than 100 units are set to benefit the most, which comes up to 70% of users. Domestic, commercial and industrial consumers will be beneficiaries of the overall reductions.

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved the proposal submitted by state-run power distributor MSEDCL, marking a significant shift from the usual trend of tariff hikes.

While petitions in the past typically sought tariff increases of about 10%, this time MSEDCL sought a cut, aiming to provide relief to consumers and promote economic activity.

To support farmers with reliable daytime power, the state is pushing ahead with the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0.

The government also emphasised its increased focus on renewable energy in power procurement agreements, which is expected to yield cost savings and help maintain affordable tariffs in the long term.
