With the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 just around the corner, the Department of Telecommunications has undertaken preparations to enable seamless connection for millions of pilgrims and visitors by upgrading telecom infrastructure throughout the city, Mela area, and key public places in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Telecom providers have been instructed to deploy advanced technology and optimise their networks to support the massive influx of people expected to attend the world's largest religious gathering.

To improve the telecom infrastructure, 126 km of optical fibre cables have been laid out in the city premises. In addition, 328 new towers have been installed to further strengthen coverage across the urban landscape.

A total of 575 new Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) across all mobile technologies have also been deployed to ensure uninterrupted connectivity in the city during the Mela.

In the Mela area, 192 km of optical fibre cables have been laid to provide high-speed, reliable network coverage. To cater to the massive demand, 78 transportable towers and 150 outdoor small cell solutions have also been deployed.

To enhance public safety and convenience, 53 help desks across the Mela area have been set up. These help desks will support services such as the reporting of suspected fraud communications and blocking lost or stolen mobiles.

Additionally, a cell broadcast alert facility and a common alert protocol integrated platform will be used to send emergency alerts, disaster warnings, and general public awareness messages throughout the Mela period.

Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea have established three disaster management centres in the Mela area to support emergency communications and ensure prompt response during any crisis situation. The latest technology will equip these centres to provide vital communication channels during natural or man-made disasters.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is a major pilgrimage that draws millions of people from around the world to Prayagraj. The festival, which takes place every 12 years, is a significant opportunity for spiritual renewal and cultural exchange. The 2025 Mela is predicted to be one of the greatest in history, necessitating extraordinary coordination and infrastructure to ensure its success.
