India and Europe continue to strengthen their economic ties, and opportunities for bilateral trade and investment are expanding. As Indian enterprises seek to expand into new markets and take advantage of opportunities in Europe, there is no better location than the heart of Europe: North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). NRW is a leading hub of innovation for diverse sectors—while it is Germany’s industrial and economic backbone and leads in manufacturing, the region is also home to innovative players in next-gen technologies. No wonder NRW is called “Europe’s Heartbeat.”

At the recent Nasscom Global Confluence 2025 in Delhi the North Rhine-Westphalia state joined as a Country Partner, represented by the state’s trade and investment agency NRW.Global Business. From the deliberations between Indian and German leaders at the summit it was clear that the opportunities for digital and green energy partnerships are huge, and the scope is boundless.

The Big Opportunity

Felix Neugart, Chief Executive Officer, NRW.Global Business said, “At the heart of this opportunity lies a powerful synergy—India’s dynamic digital ecosystem and Germany’s industrial and technological leadership. Together, we have the potential to shape a future that is digitally advanced, sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.” He also highlighted that North Rhine-Westphalia is home to some of the world’s most advanced manufacturing, engineering, and sustainability solutions. “We lead in Industry 4.0, clean energy, and smart mobility—critical areas for a sustainable digital future.”

To put this into perspective, NRW contributes 20% of Germany's GDP, with digital technologies alone generating €15 billion annually. The Greentech sector in NRW sees companies generating €27.9 billion in revenue. The region has emerged as a hub for innovation in smart manufacturing, automation, and digitalisation.

Dr Philipp Ackermann, German Ambassador to India provided a complimentary context, “The new government in Germany is going to invest a lot of money into digitalisation. Given the skills of Indian companies in technology, they will find Germany to be a very good market, particularly the North Rhine-Westphalia region.”

Indian Companies Thriving In NRW

More and more companies from the Indian technology sector are heading to North Rhine-Westphalia with bellwethers like Infosys and TCS already having a large presence there. Rajesh Nambiar, President of industry body Nasscom explained, “We have a framework under which our member companies get easy access to German markets through NRW.Global Business, and this includes physical infrastructure. This enables Indian tech companies to get up and running quickly and this approach is a great way to pilot a collaboration between a German state and India.”

“Under the Nasscom Launchpad initiative, we, along with our five partner cities – Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen, Krefeld, and Dortmund, have actively showcased NRW’s business environment to Indian companies. Each of these cities is offering free co-working spaces, allowing Indian startups and tech firms to seamlessly integrate into the local ecosystem. Additionally, we have introduced a €10,000 welcome package for international startups looking to set up operations in NRW and to connect them to our clusters and digital hubs,” explained Neugart.

Added Ambika Banotra, Chief Representative, NRW.Global Business India, "We at NRW.Global Business can take this India-Germany collaboration further by fostering cross-innovation and connecting SMEs (Mittelstand) from both countries to work together. This will unlock new opportunities for co-creation and digital transformation.”

She added that NRW.Global Business provides free-of-cost advisory services and business handholding and focuses on Indian companies who complement German businesses and can create a win-win situation for both sides. “For example, an e-commerce platform providing supply chain optimization solutions, or digital solutions tailored for traditional manufacturing industries can gain strong traction in the German market. Similarly, Indian companies working in sustainability, e-mobility, renewable energy, and industrial automation can explore opportunities in asset management and green tech solutions,” she explained.

A Win-Win Partnership

North Rhine-Westphalia’s progress is driven by a collaborative approach between R&D institutions, academia, and industries, all working together through various platforms to deliver cutting-edge solutions for the future. Neugart added that NRW.Global Business was already in discussions with several Indian companies looking to establish their Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in North Rhine-Westphalia, particularly in emerging sectors such as Hydrogen and Clean Energy. “This showcases that NRW is not only opening doors for Indian tech firms but also ensuring that these collaborations drive meaningful transformation in German businesses as well," he emphasised.

According to Neugart, the cultural aspects have also been addressed. “There is a growing ecosystem not only for Indian companies but also Indians in North Rhine-Westphalia with 130 Indian companies already having invested in NRW and we have more than 40,000 Indians living in NRW.”

Multiple areas of collaboration between India and Germany were discussed at Nasscom Global Confluence, with three key areas of partnership taking centre-stage:

Digitalisation, AI & Industry 4.0: Germany’s world-renowned expertise in advanced manufacturing, combined with India’s leadership in digital technologies, presents a unique opportunity to develop next-generation industrial solutions. By collaborating in these areas, the two nations can drive innovations that enhance efficiency while ensuring sustainability.

Green Technology & Smart Cities: Digital innovations in renewable energy, smart grids, and e-mobility will play a central role in helping both nations transition to carbon-neutral economies. The collaboration between Indian tech firms and German clean-tech pioneers offers an exciting opportunity to accelerate this transition. Together, the two nations can build smarter, greener cities that are energy-efficient, sustainable, and resilient.

Cybersecurity & Digital Trust: With increasing digitalisation comes the growing need for cybersecurity and digital trust. India and Germany can join forces to create stronger cybersecurity frameworks, uphold digital ethics, and work toward regulatory harmonisation. This will ensure digital economies remain secure and trustworthy, providing a solid foundation for future innovations and sustainable growth.
