US Vice President JD Vance has identified four key issues that prompted some voters who backed him and President Donald Trump in 2024 to switch to the Democrats in the 2026 US midterm elections, with the Iran war emerging as the biggest factor behind the Republican defeat.

In a lengthy post on X, Vance cited the findings of a pollster who surveyed former Trump supporters about what it would take to bring them back to the Republican camp. According to Vance, the four most common responses, “accounting for nearly all of the responses,” were:

  1. End the war

  2. Focus on cost of living/inflation

  3. Put America First

  4. Change our relationship to Israel

“Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results,” Vance wrote.

Of the four issues, he singled out the war as the principal reason for the Republican defeat.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” he said.

A Heavy Defeat For Republicans

According to Associated Press data available around 10 pm IST on Wednesday, Democrats had won 228 seats in the House of Representatives against 139 for Republicans, comfortably crossing the 218 seats required for a majority. In the Senate, Democrats held 54 seats, including two independents who caucus with them, against 44 for Republicans. Two Senate races were yet to be called.

Vance said the same pollster had predicted that Republicans would lose the generic congressional ballot by 13 percentage points.

“I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this,” he wrote.

'Our Voters Did Show Up'

Vance argued that voter turnout was not the main reason for the Republican defeat, although he acknowledged that the party could have performed better in some areas.

Citing Florida as an example, he said the electorate there was “9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024.”

“The main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he wrote.

He also acknowledged that the Republican Party's economic messaging “wasn't sharp enough down the stretch”.

'Anyone Pushing Amnesty Is Lying'

Vance warned that some Republican leaders could attempt to attribute the party's defeat to its immigration policies and push for amnesty for undocumented immigrants.

“There will be a lot of gaslighting,” he wrote, adding that he was open to changing immigration enforcement by focusing more on businesses that hire undocumented workers.

“Anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you,” he said.

Vance also challenged those who believed the war was worth the political cost of losing the Senate.

“If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest,” he wrote.

He concluded by urging disappointed Republican supporters to channel their frustration into electing candidates who shared their views, while expressing optimism about the country's future.

What Are US Midterm Elections?

In the US, the President is elected for a four-year term. Midterm elections take place halfway through that term, when voters elect members of Congress and, in several states, governors and other local representatives.

The US Congress is the country's national legislature and has two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The House has 435 voting members, all of whom face elections every two years. The Senate has 100 members who serve six-year terms, with roughly one-third of its seats contested every two years.

Governors head individual US states and are broadly comparable to chief ministers in India, although their powers and responsibilities differ under the US federal system.

The two dominant political parties in the country are the Democrats and the Republicans. Midterm elections are often viewed as a referendum on the sitting President's performance, with the President's party frequently losing seats in Congress.
