Instagram has introduced Instants, a new feature designed for sharing casual, unfiltered photos. Instants are ephemeral in nature — temporary photos that disappear after being viewed by recipients. However, they are automatically saved in the sender's private archive for up to one year. Users can later compile them into recaps and repost to Stories. Instants appear as a stack of photos in the bottom right corner of the Instagram inbox. Users can tap the camera to capture and send images to close friends or mutual followers.

Friends can react and reply to your Instant, with responses going to direct messages. Instagram is also rolling out an Instants app in select countries on iOS and Android. The standalone app provides quicker camera access using the same Instagram account.

How To Use Instagram Instants

  • To share an Instant, open your Instagram inbox and tap the stack of photos icon in the bottom right corner.
  • Add a caption before capturing the photo, unlike Stories, where captions are added afterwards. However, no further editing or filters are possible.
  • Once in the camera view, tap the white shutter button to capture and send photos. An undo button appears immediately after sharing, allowing you to retract the Instant before anyone views it.
  • Select your audience: either Close Friends or followers (accounts you follow back). Recipients can react, reply, and even share the Instant themselves.
  • Shared Instants appear as a photo stack in the bottom right of your friends' inboxes and disappear automatically once viewed.
  • Senders can also delete unopened Instants from their archive.

Additional Features

Archive: Instants are stored in a private archive accessible only to the user.

Recap: Archived Instants can be turned into Racap and shared via Stories.

Snooze: You can temporarily hide Instants from your inbox by holding and swiping.

According to Instagram, safety protections for Teen Accounts and Family Centre remain in place, including shared time limits, Sleep Mode, and parental supervision tools.
