Google I/O 2025: Android 16, Android XR, Gemini-AI Updates, Material 3 Expressive, More On The Cards
AI could take the spotlight at Google I/O, with the entire Android device ecosystem tightly integrated with Gemini going forward.

We're just about two weeks away from Google's mega event, Google I/O, on May 20–21 and anticipation is high as to the new products, technologies, AI innovations, and Android.
At 10:30 p.m. on May 20, the Google I/O keynote will be livestreamed. Before that, on May 13, the Android Show will premiere, providing a sneak peek at future Android updates.
Here's a look at what to expect from Google I/O and the Android Show.
Android 16
The Android Show raises the prospect of an announcement or finalisation of Android 16. Among the features that have been confirmed via its beta release: support for live app updates; photo picker redesign; advanced camera features; improved Health Connect 2.0; Bluetooth-powered Auracast for sharing multiple audio streams; better adaptive refresh rate support; wider availability of identity verification feature; and updated privacy settings.
Android XR
Android XR, the extended reality operating system developed by Google and Samsung, may be unveiled at the Google I/O. Combining virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences for headsets (including Samsung's Project Moohan) and smart glasses, the platform will have Google's Gemini AI at its heart. Google is hoping that Android XR will be able to power specialised headsets of other tech companies too and compete with Apple and Meta in the mixed-reality space.
Material 3 Expressive
According to Google's event calendar and a blog post that was inadvertently published, Google will reveal a new version of its Android design language.
Android's design system is expected to undergo major modifications, moving from "Material 3" to "Material Design 3 Expressive". The emotional and engaging UI will have colour, size, shape, motion and containment at its core, helping improve the experience of users.
AI-Gemini Updates
AI could take the spotlight at Google I/O. The entire Android device ecosystem may get even tightly integrated with Gemini going forward. There are also reports of advanced agentic features for Gemini, "more personalised assistant" experience, improved integration of Gemini with Workspace, and more.
Others: Google TV, Gemini In-Car, And More
Through the Video Discovery API and Android 16 for TV, Google hopes to improve user engagement on Google TV. The company is expected to preview Gemini in-car and provide developers access to tools for Android Auto and Automotive OS apps. New Google Pay and Google Wallet features and Gemini Nano for developers are other possibilities.
