Apple has announced that it has surpassed a 60% reduction in its global greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2015 levels, as part of its 2030 goal to become carbon neutral across its entire footprint in the next five years.

Apple said its efforts to reduce carbon footprint — including renewable supply chain and designing products with more recycled materials —avoided an estimated 41 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of its environmental efforts in products, the company unveiled the new MacBook Air earlier this year, which has the highest percentage of recycled content of any Apple device at over 55%. With the release of the Mac mini last year, Apple unveiled its first carbon-neutral Mac. Additionally, consumers can select any Apple Watch in any material that is carbon neutral.

Apple's global supply chain has 17.8 GW of renewable electricity online, with the aim to transition to 100% renewable energy for their Apple production by 2030. Suppliers avoided 21.8 MT of emissions in 2024, an over 17% increase from the previous year, Apple said.

Twenty-six of its direct semiconductor suppliers have committed to reduce at least 90% of highly potent fluorinated greenhouse gases from their Apple production facilities by 2030. In 2024, display and semiconductor suppliers abated 8.4 MT of emissions, the company added.

Apple already surpassed 99% on the way towards its 2025 goals to use 100% recycled rare earth elements in magnets and 100% recycled cobalt in batteries. The most common application of rare earth elements in Apple products is in magnets, while more than 97% of the cobalt used by Apple is in batteries.

In 2024, suppliers participating in Apple's Zero Waste programme diverted around 600,000 tonnes of waste from landfills, for a total of 3.6 MT since the start of the programme. That amounts to the removal of 4.5 million square metres of landfill space, Apple said.

Apple and its suppliers have also saved over 90 billion gallons of fresh water since launching the Supplier Clean Water Programme in 2013. The average reuse rate by participating suppliers was 42% in 2024, saving 14 billion gallons of fresh water, the company said.
