Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is among the most important retirement benefit schemes in India. The government-backed scheme aims to provide financial security to private sector employees in their retirement years. Through monthly contributions, salaried employees in the formal sector can build a retirement corpus under the EPF scheme.

Both the employee and the employer contribute 12% each of the basic salary and the dearness allowance (DA) of the employee every month to the EPF scheme. The government has fixed the EPF interest rate at 8.25% for FY 2024-25.

The scheme is administered by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). All EPF subscribers need to have a Universal Account Number (UAN) to access their accounts. It is a unique number assigned to every employee contributing to the EPF scheme.

You can activate your UAN using the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) App. This can be done with the help of Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT). Follow these steps to activate it:

How To Activate UAN Using UMANG App

1. If you don’t have the app, you can download UMANG from the Play Store or the App Store. Along with this, also download the Aadhaar Face RD app, as it will be used for face authentication.

2. Open the UMANG app and navigate to the section "UAN Allotment and Activation."

3. Now you need to provide your Aadhaar number and mobile number and consent for Aadhaar verification.

4. Tap the “Send OTP” option to receive the OTP on your mobile number connected to the Aadhaar card.

5. If no UAN exists for your EPF account, you will need to provide consent for face authentication.

6. Perform the face scan.

7. Once the verification concludes, your UAN will be generated and it will be sent to you via SMS.

This method is applicable for those who already have a UAN, but it has not been activated yet. However, international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan can continue to generate their UAN via their employer.

After generating the UAN, you can use it to access services such as filing claims, viewing your passbook balance and updating your KYC information.

Face authentication offers advantages such as secure verification of Aadhaar information. Additionally, the UAN activation will be completed simultaneously at the time of UAN generation. It eliminates the need to start the activation procedure separately after generating the UAN.
