The long-standing buzz around a sequel to 3 Idiots has finally been put to rest, with Aamir Khan confirming that the film is actively in development. The update comes years after the original became one of Hindi cinema's most loved and talked-about films.

In a recent interview with Amar Ujala, Aamir revealed that director Rajkumar Hirani is currently focused on shaping the sequel, working closely with writer Abhijat Joshi. While the script is still being fine-tuned, the core idea has already impressed the actor.

"Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I've heard the story and it's wonderful. The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” Aamir shared.

The sequel will bring back the original trio — Rancho, Farhan and Raju — but at a completely different stage in their lives. It will explore where life has taken them after a decade, while keeping intact the warmth and wit that defined the first film.

"It's the story of the same characters you saw in 3 Idiots but there is a time-jump of 10 years. Rajkumar and Abhijat Joshi have conceived a nice story. I will be playing Phunsukh Wangdu again,” he said.

Calling the project close to his heart, Aamir said he is eager to step back into the shoes of Rancho — one of his most iconic roles. "It's a beautiful story conceived by Raju and Abhijat. I'm looking forward to it, and to playing Phunsukh Wangdu again," he added.

He also offered a quick update on another collaboration with Hirani — a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke. According to Aamir, the project has been paused as the script hasn't fully come together yet. “Dadasaheb Phalke's story is very inspirational. Rajkumar Hirani wrote three drafts but is not happy with them, so it's on hold for now. At the moment, his focus is on 3 Idiots 2,” he said.

Originally released in 2009, 3 Idiots featured R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani. Its sharp take on the education system, combined with humour and emotion, helped it become a landmark film that continues to resonate with audiences even today.
