Canada Announces $100 Million Scholarship Program, 200 Fully Funded Seats For Indian Students

Canada has initiated a substantial scholarship initiative aimed at Indian students. The nation has pledged a whopping $100 million (Rs 921 Crore) in scholarship funds as part of its renewed educational relationship with India.

This announcement came on March 2 from the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Fresh efforts are being implemented to enhance connections with India in the domains of education and research. Central to this new venture is the significant financial commitment made by the University of Toronto to support Indian students.

$100 Million for 200 fully funded scholarships

As per the formal announcement, the allocation of $100 million will fund as many as 200 comprehensive scholarships for students from India. It is anticipated that these scholarships will cover tuition fees and other vital expenses, thereby easing the financial burden on Indian students.

Comprehensive scholarships at international institutions are highly sought after, and the provision of such scholarships reflects the desire of institutions to draw top talent from India.

The latest bilateral education strategy between India and Canada features the establishment of three hybrid academic centres in India to foster innovation and research partnerships.

A flagship innovation campus emerges from the collaboration between Canada's Dalhousie University and two premier Indian institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT Tirupati) and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Tirupati (IISER Tirupati), aiming to drive cutting-edge advancements in technology and science.

Complementing this, the University of Toronto will launch a Centre of Excellence dedicated to research collaboration across disciplines, while McGill University establishes its own Centre of Excellence targeting talent development and artificial intelligence research.

These McGill and Toronto centers will specifically unite Indian and Canadian researchers in AI and related fields, creating hubs for knowledge exchange and joint projects that promise to accelerate breakthroughs in this transformative domain.

Promising partnerships

Although these collaborations are still in their infancy, the agreements highlight domains such as faculty interchange, research alliances, and specialized academic tracks. These pacts followed a visit in February 2026 by over 20 university leaders from Canada to India, noted as Canada's most extensive academic delegation to the nation.

India continues to be one of the largest sources of international students and new permanent residents in Canada. Additionally, the nation boasts a significant diaspora, with upwards of 1.8 million Canadians of Indian descent.
