Banks across India are set to remain closed on the first day of May due to multiple national and regional observances. On May 1, occasions like Maharashtra Day and May Day (Labour Day) will lead to a holiday in several states and union territories. As a result, banking services, along with schools, colleges, government offices, and post offices, will remain shut in many regions. While physical bank branches will not operate in the affected states, customers can continue to use digital services without disruption. ATMs, net banking, mobile banking, and UPI services will function as usual during the holiday.
While banks remained shut for several days due to a mix of national holidays, regional festivals and weekends in April, May will see a total of 12 holidays.
Bank Holiday On May 1
As per the holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India, banks will remain closed on May 1 across most parts of the country. However, bank branches will stay open in Gujarat, Odisha, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. The holiday is being observed to commemmorate Maharashtra Day, Buddha Pournima, May Day (Labour Day), and the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu, depending on the state.
Customers are advised to plan their banking work in advance to avoid last-minute inconvenience. It is important to note that although May 1 falls on a Friday, banks will reopen on May 2, as closures are only mandated on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

The Reserve Bank of India has listed a total of 12 bank holidays in May, including weekends and region-specific holidays observed by both public and private sector banks.
- May 1: Everywhere except Gujarat, Odisha, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Nagaland, Meghalaya (Maharashtra Day, Buddha Pournima, May Day, birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu)
- May 9: West Bengal (Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti); second Saturday in rest of India
- May 16: Sikkim (State Day)
- May 23: Fourth Saturday
- May 26: Tripura (Birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam)
- May 27: Everywhere except Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Mumbai, Goa, Bihar (Eid-ul-Adha/Id-ul-Zuha)
- May 28: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Goa, Bihar (Bakri Eid)
- May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31: Sundays
